Healthy Food: What to Buy on a Whole Food Plant-Based Diet

Updated: Nov 10, 2019

I’m sure you will agree with me when I say that the whole healthy food and healthy eating thing can be confusing.

Here is the thing:

Living a healthy plant-based lifestyle isn’t as difficult as you might think.

Let me show you.

It doesn't matter what “diet” you are on. When it's about living a healthy lifestyle you only need to remember one simple principle.

In this blog, I'm going to share this one simple principle and also give a list of different kinds of healthy food you can buy when you are on a healthy diet.

If you want to learn more about this, all you have to do is read on...

Healthy Food- Whole Food Plant-based

What s healthy food should I eat?

The principle of eating healthy is simple.

Eating whole food means food that is minimally processed and unrefined. Food such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes are healthy for you to eat.

Mr. Micheal Pollan made even simpler: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly Plants.

Fruits & Vegetable

When it is about a healthy lifestyle, fruits and vegetables are an essential part of your journey.

Going for more organic fruits and vegetables is good both for you and for the environment.

You can eat greens such as kale, collard, lettuce, parsley, cilantro, arugula.

Other veggies squash, celery, mushrooms, asparagus, peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, and sea vegetables are also great.

If getting fresh fruits and vegetables doesn't fit within your budget. then try mixing it up with frozen fruits and veggies.

Fresh vegetables and fruits have the most nutritious but frozen ones also have a similar mix of vitamins and nutrients.

Also, frozen fruits are the best for smoothies.

Any fruits and veggies are great, as long as they are organically produced. You can get fruits like:

apricots, apples, bananas, berries, cherries, melons, mangoes, papayas, pineapple, grapes, kiwi, and plums.

In my next blog, I will talk about how you can eat healthy organic on a budget by making slight changes.

The legumes & Seeds

Eating legumes is filling and also provides lean protein.

All these foods are filled with vitamins and minerals. Here are all the legumes you can buy:

Beans such as adzuki, black beans, black-eyed peas, fava beans, garbanzo beans, lima beans, pinto beans, and green beans. Also, chickpeas and lentils.

In terms of seeds, flax seeds and chia seeds are highly recommended.

Other seeds such as sesame, pumpkin, and sunflower can be used occasionally.

Bread

Always choose bread that is whole grain. Multigrain, enriched wheat flour, unbleached wheat flour, wheat flour, and organic wheat flour are not the same as whole grain.

Look for whole-grain or whole-wheat bread made with these flours:

Whole wheat pastry flour,

whole wheat flour,

white whole-wheat flour.

If you continue reading, I will mention below more whole grains (flours) you can buy.

Potato & Pasta

Potato is a starchy food so it is recommended to eat only occasionally.

If you love eating pasta, I have good news for you.

Any pasta based on 100% whole grains is the best option for you.

Multigrain is not the same as whole grain.

Multigrain just means that there are multiple types of grains in the product.

Whole grain means that it is unprocessed or minimally processed grain.

Other types of grains are spelt, amaranth, quinoa.

So, for example, spelt pasta is great option.

Grains

When eating things like cereals, bulgur, couscous, pasta, bread, or any other product based on grains, focus on it being WHOLE grains.

Whole grains are Amaranth, Quinoa, Rye, Spelt, Barley, Kamut.

For example, if you eat pasta to make sure it is spelt pasta.

It is also better to eat quinoa or wild rice (if you have access to it) instead of white rice.

Chips & Snacks

There are a lot of healthy snacks out there.

When looking for snacks make sure that they are made of healthy ingredients.

For example, chickpea chips are made of Chickpeas.

Also, make sure the snack doesn’t have too much sugar.

There are a variety of chips to choose from. They are based on healthy grains.

For instance, Chickpea chips. A

Avoid vegetable chips that are cooked in palm oil or oils labeled as "partially hydrogenated." These are high in saturated fat.

Meat Substitute or not?

I understand that stop eating meat can be difficult. I usually say to that meat substitutes can be helpful when you are transiting. However, meat substitutes are processed meat which doesn't belong in the whole food plant-based lifestyle. Learn more about meat substitutes diet here.

Key takeaways:

Despite the various information you get on the internet their one simple principle you should follow when eating healthy: Eat food that is minimally processed and unrefined. Food such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes are healthy for you to eat.
